How Sclerotherapy Works.

Sclerotherapy works by delivering a small amount of specially formulated medicine through an injection directly into the vein. This Sclerotherapy solution causes the vein to scar, forcing blood to coagulate and the vein to collapse. Once the vein is closed, blood is rerouted to healthier nearby veins.

The Sclerotherapy Experience.

During Sclerotherapy treatment, your doctor will ensure you are comfortable. It’s common to feel some pressure as your doctor places the needle in your vein. Once the needle is in the correct place and your doctor begins to deliver small amounts of the special Sclerotherapy solution, you may feel a mild sensation.

After your Sclerotherapy treatment, your doctor will place a bandage over the treatment site. You’ll then be taken to a recovery area to review follow-up and at-home recovery care. Most patients can return to normal activity almost immediately, but your doctor will help you determine when it is safe for you to do so. Temporary side effects from Sclerotherapy treatment include:

  • Bruising
  • Raised red areas
  • Small skin sores
  • Darkened skin in the form of lines or spots
  • Multiple tiny red blood vessels

These effects normally go away within a few days after treatment. Results include the disappearance of visible spider and varicose veins.
