Signs, Symptoms, and Treatments.
What Are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are a type of benign vein disease known for their gnarled, bulging vein appearance and most commonly occur in the lower legs. Veins that have become varicose have valves that function improperly allowing blood to flow backward or pool in between each valve. This is the leading cause of aching pain, discomfort, and unsightly cosmetic concerns. Varicose veins are more common in women due to childbirth, however, contrary to the popular belief that varicose veins are a female-only issue, bulging leg veins in men are also very common. In fact, the national average for the prevalence of varicose veins in men is 45%, only a 10% difference compared to the 55% prevalence in women. The best varicose vein prevention methods to help mitigate symptoms from worsening include compression stockings for varicose veins, regular hydration and exercise, and vein treatments to reduce bulging veins. Tampa residents used to Florida’s warm climate may be resistant to compression stockings, however, they are still one of the best prevention methods for varicose veins.
Common Varicose Veins Symptoms.
— Appearance of bulging, gnarled veins
— Blue, red, and purple vein coloration

Recognizing Varicose Veins.
During the early stages of varicose vein disease, symptoms can range from slight discomfort and distended veins to sharp pain and visual changes to your skin. Ignoring the early stages of varicose veins and foregoing treatment only encourages underlying circulatory problems to worsen and other types of dangerous vein disease to develop.
If you are experiencing any of the above varicose veins symptoms you may have vein disease or an underlying circulatory issue. Left untreated, varicose veins can lead to other forms of vein disease that can actually be serious and potentially life-threatening, such as with Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). Celebrities like Regis Philbin, Serena Williams, and NASCAR champion Brian Vickers all suffered from DVT.

Varicose Veins Causes.
The exact cause of varicose vein disease is unknown, however, understanding your circulatory system can help illuminate why veins bulge out in the first place. While arteries deliver oxygenated blood from your heart to the rest of your body, it’s your veins that transport non-oxygenated blood back up to your heart. Inside healthy veins, one-way valves control blood flow so it only goes up towards your heart against gravity. For example, when you walk, the muscles in your legs squeeze even your deep veins in order to force the non-oxygenated blood up. When your leg muscles are relaxed, however, these valves close allowing blood to flow backwards down your legs or pool in between the vein valves normally spaced about one inch apart. The more this happens, the more likely it will lead to the painful and unsightly varicose vein disease symptoms outlined above.
