What to Expect

Our Cycle of Care.

Step 1

Consultation with an AVVS Board-Certified Vein Doctor

We want you to have long-lasting results from your best vein treatment. That’s why our vein doctors take the time to meet with you to learn your concerns and goals. During your consultation, we’ll discuss your symptoms, desired outcomes, and order the appropriate testing. Conservative therapy options will be discussed at this time as well.

Step 2

Conservative Therapy Ultrasound

Once you decide on a course of treatment with our doctors, you’ll return for a diagnostic ultrasound. We use your ultrasound test to evaluate the complexity of your veins that cannot be seen by just evaluating your legs. An ultrasound is a non-invasive procedure that determines exact vein size and whether you have leakage or issues with the valves in your veins. It also maps your veins to help doctors treat them more effectively. Ultrasounds are performed by a registered vascular technologist.

Step 3

Review of Ultrasound Test

After your ultrasound, you’ll return to meet with your doctor at which time he will discuss the root cause of your symptoms and discuss the best vein treatment options available. When it comes to treatment options, our surgeons always consider non-surgical or minimally-invasive options first, including, but not limited to endovascular and endovenous procedures. Most insurances require these conservative options before authorizing other vein procedures. During this appointment, you’ll also be measured for 20-33mm compression stockings that come up to the thigh or we’ll provide you with a script to purchase them elsewhere. These stockings are required both prior to and following any vein procedure.

Step 4

Authorization If Needed

Once you have seen the physician and you have agreed to any recommended procedures, we’ll verify the treatments you need are covered under your insurance plan and contact them to ensure we provide all the information they require. This is required for most insurances (except Medicare) and can be as simple as a quick phone call or a long, drawn-out process taking several weeks. We try our best to find out any out-of-pocket costs you may incur, however, some insurance companies will not provide that information to us but may be more likely to provide it to you should you request it separately. Once we have authorization or approval we will contact you to schedule your best vein treatment at a time that is convenient for you.

Step 5

Treatment as Outlined

When it’s time for your procedure appointment our staff will ensure your comfort (including pleasant conversation to distract you if needles make you nervous).

Step 6

Follow-Up Ultrasound

Following your treatments, our registered vascular technologist will conduct a follow-up ultrasound, discuss your current symptoms, benchmark your progress, and evaluate the treated and/or healing areas.

Step 7

6-8 Week Follow-Up Appointment

Six to eight weeks following your treatment, you’ll meet with your doctor again for a follow-up discussion of any lingering symptoms. Your doctor will evaluate the treated and/or healing areas to determine whether additional treatment or cosmetic cleanup is needed. Depending on your concerns, additional procedures, such as Sclerotherapy for varicose vein branches may be necessary.

Step 8

Cosmetic Cleanup if Indicated

We’ll schedule an appointment should you decide to receive a cosmetic clean-up procedure a few months following your vein treatment. We’ll also outline lifestyle changes, such as exercising, to help you prevent circulation issues that can lead to vein disease. Vein issues are controlled, not cured, which is why we take continued care seriously. We also offer cosmetic cleanup procedures to help you manage any remaining visible symptoms or concerns. No matter your needs, we help you stay on top of regular follow-up appointments to maintain healthy veins so you can live your best life.
